Background of the Study
Environmental innovation—defined as the development and application of new products, processes, or practices aimed at reducing environmental impacts—has gained prominence as a catalyst for economic growth in Nigeria. With increasing global pressure to adopt sustainable practices, Nigerian industries are increasingly investing in green technologies and environmentally friendly processes. Such innovations range from waste reduction and energy-efficient manufacturing to the development of eco-friendly products that meet international standards (Adeniyi, 2023). These innovations not only reduce environmental degradation but also drive competitive advantage, reduce costs, and open up new market opportunities. In Nigeria, where economic performance is tightly linked to industrial productivity and resource efficiency, environmental innovation represents a strategic lever for enhancing economic performance.
Studies indicate that firms that adopt green technologies experience improved productivity, lower operational costs, and enhanced market reputation. This positive relationship between environmental innovation and economic performance is further supported by government initiatives and incentives aimed at fostering research and development in sustainable technologies (Chinwe, 2024). However, despite the potential benefits, the pace of environmental innovation in Nigeria remains uneven, with challenges including limited access to finance, inadequate research infrastructure, and a lack of skilled personnel hampering progress. This study examines the relationship between environmental innovation and economic performance in Nigeria by analyzing empirical data from various industrial sectors and exploring how innovations contribute to productivity, profitability, and sustainable growth (Oluwaseun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
While environmental innovation holds significant promise for boosting economic performance, many Nigerian firms face obstacles that limit their ability to adopt and scale green technologies. The high costs associated with research and development, coupled with inadequate access to financing and technical expertise, impede the diffusion of environmentally innovative practices across industries (Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, inconsistent regulatory frameworks and a lack of government support further exacerbate these challenges, resulting in a gap between the potential benefits of environmental innovation and the actual economic outcomes observed in many sectors.
This disconnect is particularly evident in small and medium enterprises, which often lack the resources to invest in green technologies despite their potential for improving operational efficiency and reducing waste. The insufficient integration of environmental objectives into overall business strategies not only limits economic performance but also hampers Nigeria’s ability to meet international sustainability standards. This study aims to investigate the factors that influence the relationship between environmental innovation and economic performance, identifying key barriers and opportunities for enhancing sustainable growth in Nigeria. By addressing these issues, the research seeks to provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and industry leaders to foster an innovation-driven, environmentally sustainable economy.
